It is so easy to drive a HUGE amount of targeted traffic through Reddit with minimal effort in no time whatsoever. This guide will walk you through the process. If you don’t use Reddit yet, you really should. It’s a gold mind for generating traffic and connecting with your target audience.
What is Reddit?
Reddit is the self-proclaimed ‘Front Page of the Internet’. What does that mean? Well, Reddit is basically a bulletin board style social site, where users can submit content to different sub-communities and vote on the quality of other users’ submissions.
Some Facts About Reddit
- Reddit holds the world record for the largest ever secret Santa; 44,805 people sent gifts to each other in 2012.
- The median Reddit user is 25 to 34 years old, has some college education, and is in the lowest income bracket.
- 84 percent of Reddit members are men.
- There are 4,206 subreddits, Reddit’s name for topic-specific pages with five or more posts or comments per day
- The average time on site per session is 39 minutes
Where Does Reddit Fit In The Social Landscape?
Here is a quick table showing the size of some of the most well-known (to the western world) social media sites.
|Site||Registered users||Active Users||Launched|
|1+ billion||1 billion||2004|
|Google+||1+ billion||540+ million||2011|
|Skype||663+ million||280 million||2003|
|500+ million||200+ million||2006|
|225+ million||160 million||2003|
|100+ million||150 million||2010|
|Tumblr||110+ million||100 million||2007|
|Windows Live||100 million||100 million||2005|
|Dropbox||100+ million||100 million||2008|
|112 million||112 million||2005|
As the table above shows, Reddit is one of the smaller big boys. This does not mean that it should be ignored. With 112 million active users, it’s definitely worthy of some attention, especially since these figures do not give the full picture.
Reddit has amassed a loyal following of active users, who, luckily for you, have already divided themselves into their individual niches. This makes Reddit a gold mine for researching a target market.
As with most niche sites, Reddit has developed its own language and set of abbreviations.

How To Use Reddit
As with most things on the Internet, content is king. Don’t just post any old rubbish. To really reap the all the benefits that Reddit has to offer you must provide value to the community / Subreddit. This needs to be your top and only priority. Redditors will not take kindly to shameless self-promotion. He who dares may get chased out of town with pitchforks!
How to set up a Reddit account
Reddit is ridiculously easy to set up. Just click the “Login or register” link on the right column that appears on all pages, fill in a few quick details and boom, you’re ready to roll.
How to navigate Reddit and the Subreddits
At first glance, Reddit seems like a jumbled mess. But trust me, the learning curve is not steep at all. The front page is an overview of the entire site.
How to upvote / downvote content
The upvote and downvote system is similar to a Facebook Like or a Twitter favourite but with a key difference. The key to Reddit is their algorithm through which content rises to the top based on its popularity and the amount of time that a piece of content has been on Reddit. For example, if a link has been live for a week it will have many more links than one that has just been submitted, and therefore attract higher ranking.
How to submit a link
I challenge anyone to visit Reddit and not be able to work out how to submit a link in 30 seconds (it’s the big button that says “Submit Link”). The only important aspect to remember is to post your link in the most relevant Subreddit to maximise your exposure.
A quick word about spamming
A word of caution. If your eyes are lighting up at the prospect of spamming another social, don’t! Just don’t! As I mentioned before, Reddit users won’t let you get away with it. Reddit discourages spammers from dirtying its community. If you are found to be spamming, you will get banned.
Reddit Case Study
As this is only my fifth post, at the time of writing I have performed only the minimum of online marketing on this blog. This is for two primary reasons.
- I wanted to focus on content for the first few months before I begin any link building or online promotion
- It allows me to do some interesting case studies
At its birth this site, as with most personal blogs, received minimal traffic. I produced two articles, both ‘How To Guides’.
Once the articles had been created, I signed up to Reddit and submitted the links to their specific subreddits. The whole process literally took two minutes. The results can be seen below.
Overview compared to the previous month
|Visits||New Visits||Bounce Rate||Pages / Visit||Visit Duration|
|Source||Visits||% New Visits||Bounce Rate||Pages / Visit|
In case you had not guessed, I am a massive fan of Reddit! The structure of the site allows you to put your content in front of your target audience within seconds. The voting function gives you pretty much instant feedback and allows you to constantly improve and tailor your content to your target audience.
By the very fabric of its being Reddit is about interaction. So don’t just post any old rubbish. With very little effort you can reap huge rewards.
